In 1951 Grifols developed the process of plasmapheresis, a method of obtaining plasma that is now used worldwide. This process permits people to donate plasma more frequently thereby making more plasma medicines available to patients who need them. Plasma medicines are used to treat a variety of rare, and often life-threatening diseases.

Grifols formed the Academy of Plasmapheresis as part of its long history of continuous improvement and its strong commitment to education. The academy is designed to offer continuous learning to participants and, at the same time, offer a platform for opportunities, development and innovation.
